15 Thanksgiving Kids Table Ideas

The year we gave up and put the kids at their own table was the year Thanksgiving dinner stopped being a negotiation. Nobody had to sit still for ninety minutes. Nobody got told off for drawing on the good tablecloth, because we’d put paper on theirs specifically so they could. Most Thanksgiving kids table ideas start right there, with a surface nobody minds getting ruined.

If you’re hosting and you’ve got more than two children coming, a kids table isn’t a demotion. Done properly it’s the best seat in the house, and it buys the adults an actual conversation. Here are fifteen that work, plus free printable place cards, placemats and table games at the bottom.

Thanksgiving Kids Table Ideas: Set It Up So They Want to Sit There

Covering a kids table with paper for Thanksgiving

1. Give them a real table, not the end of yours. A folding table, a coffee table with cushions round it, even a cleared desk. The point is that it’s theirs.

2. Cover it in paper. Butcher paper, lining paper, a cut-open paper bag. Tape it down, put crayons in the middle, and the whole surface becomes fair game. This one idea solves about half the problem.

3. Put a crayon bundle at every seat. Tie four or five crayons with twine or an elastic band. It takes two minutes and it stops the “she’s got the red one” argument before it starts.

4. Let them make their own place cards. Print ours, hand them out the day before, and let everyone decorate their own and write the names. Suddenly they’re invested in where they’re sitting.

5. Use a placemat they can work on. Our thankful placemat has space to draw and write, so it’s a tablecloth and an activity at once. Print one per child.

Things to Do While the Food Takes Forever

6. Conversation starter cards. Put a stack in the middle. What are you most thankful for, what was the best bit of this year, what would you cook if you were in charge. The answers are usually worth writing down.

7. Thanksgiving bingo. Spot the things that happen every year. Someone mentions the traffic. Somebody falls asleep. The dog gets a bit of turkey. It works better than you’d think.

8. Would you rather cards, Thanksgiving edition. Would you rather eat only mashed potato for a year or only pie. Children have extremely strong opinions about this.

9. A stack of coloring pages. Not as the main event, just there for the lull between courses. Our Thanksgiving coloring pages print straight off.

10. A gratitude leaf each. Everyone writes one thing, then they go in a jar or get taped to a branch. We’ve got the printable leaves ready to go.

Give Them a Job

11. Make somebody the greeter. They stand by the door and take coats. It sounds small and they will take it extremely seriously.

12. Let them build the centrepiece. A jar, some leaves from the garden, a tea light. It will not be elegant. It will be the thing everyone comments on.

13. Hand over the menu. One child writes out what’s being served on a folded card. Spelling optional.

The Bits That Make It Feel Special

14. Do a snack board before the meal. Dinner always runs late. A board with crackers, cheese, grapes and carrot sticks on the kids table buys you a solid hour of goodwill.

15. Send them home with something. The place card, their drawing, a leaf from the jar. Costs nothing, and it turns up in a drawer years later.

Works for Both Thanksgivings

Thanksgiving kids table for Canadian and US Thanksgiving dates

Nothing in the pack is dated, so it prints for Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday 12 October 2026 and again for the American one on Thursday 26 November. Same table, same crayons, six weeks apart.

If you’re in Canada and want more, our Canadian Thanksgiving crafts has the gratitude tree and the maple leaf projects, and our Canadian Thanksgiving printables pack covers the rest.

A Few Things I’d Do Differently

Print everything the day before, not on the day. The printer will choose Thanksgiving morning to run out of ink. It knows.

Put the kids table in the same room as the adults if you possibly can. Separate rooms turn it into exile. Same room turns it into a club.

And don’t over-plan it. Three good things on the table beat fifteen things nobody touches. Pick the paper tablecloth, the crayons and one game, and leave it there.

More Thanksgiving Printables

Round out the day with our Thanksgiving coloring pages, which work for both dates, and the Canadian Thanksgiving crafts if you’ve got a long weekend to fill. For anything you’re keeping, print on slightly heavier paper, and there’s a note on the best printer and paper for printables if you want the detail.

Quick Questions

What should I put on a Thanksgiving kids table?

A paper tablecloth they can draw on, crayons at every seat, place cards they decorated themselves, a placemat with space to write, and one or two table games. Three good things beat fifteen they ignore.

How do you keep kids busy at Thanksgiving dinner?

Give them something to do with their hands at the table rather than expecting them to sit still. Paper to draw on, conversation cards, bingo and coloring pages all work. A snack board before the meal buys you the most time of anything.

What age is a kids table for?

It works from about three up to around eleven. Younger than three usually still wants a grown-up nearby, and older than eleven will often rather be at the main table, which is fine.

Are the printables free?

Yes. The place cards, placemat, conversation cards, bingo and gratitude leaves are in one free PDF with no email and no sign-up. Just don’t resell them.

Can I use these for Canadian Thanksgiving?

Yes. Nothing in the pack is dated or country specific, so it works for Monday 12 October 2026 in Canada and Thursday 26 November in the United States.
