Decorating the sukkah is genuinely the kids’ favourite part of the whole festival, and honestly, it should be, because a sukkah is meant to be beautiful. The lovely thing is that almost all of it can be made by little hands with paper, string and a bit of enthusiasm. These sukkah decorations for kids are the easy, low-cost ones that actually get made and hung, not the Pinterest ones that need a glue gun and a degree. There are free printables too, so you can skip straight to the fun.

Paper Chains (the No-Fail One)
Start here, because a three-year-old can do it and it never goes wrong. Cut strips of coloured paper, loop them through each other, glue or tape the ends, and keep going. Kids will happily produce metres of the stuff. String them across the roof or along the walls of the sukkah and you’ve instantly got that festive look. This is the one my youngest asks for first, and we always end up with more chain than sukkah.
Hanging Fruit Garlands
Fruit is a big Sukkot theme, since it’s a harvest festival, so hanging fruit is perfect. Colour and cut our printable apples, grapes and pomegranates, punch a hole in the top, and thread them onto string to hang from the roof. If you’d rather use real dried fruit, that works beautifully too and smells lovely. Either way it nods to the harvest, which is a nice thing to mention while you make them.
Tissue Paper Suncatchers
These are gorgeous in a sukkah because the light filters down through the leafy roof and lights them up. Cut a shape from our template, fill the middle with little pieces of coloured tissue paper stuck to sticky contact paper, and hang it where the light hits. A bit more fiddly, so it suits slightly older kids, but the result is worth it.
Colour-In Posters
If you want a low-mess option, or something for a rainy afternoon, printable posters are the answer. Kids colour a sukkah scene or a “Chag Sameach” design, you laminate it if you can, and hang it inside. It stays up all week and it’s the least messy decoration on this list, which some days is exactly what you need.
Drawings and Handmade Bits
Don’t overlook the simplest one. A tradition many families keep is hanging up the kids’ own drawings and paintings inside the sukkah, of favourite fruits, of the family, of whatever they fancy. Give them paper and let them go, then string their artwork up. It’s the decoration they’ll be proudest of, and it costs nothing.
How to Hang It All
A few quick tips so it actually stays up. String or wool tied between the roof beams gives you a line to peg things onto. Little clothes pegs or paper clips make hanging and swapping easy. And if you’re decorating a pretend indoor “sukkah” (a table draped with a sheet works), the same decorations look just as good taped to the walls.
