The last week of school before Christmas is chaos. Nobodyās learning fractions on December 18th, and every teacher I know keeps a stack of word searches in the drawer for exactly that week. At home itās the same on a rainy afternoon: give a kid a pencil and a puzzle and youāll get twenty quiet minutes. Sometimes thirty, if youāre lucky and thereās hot chocolate involved.
So here are 12 Christmas word search printables in three real levels, all in one free PDF with an answer key for every puzzle. The easy ones have little pictures so kids who are just learning to read can join in. The hard ones have backwards words and will keep a ten-year-old (or a grandparent) busy for a while. Iāve watched it happen. Nobody will admit how long it took.
Whatās in the Pack
| Level | Grid | Words go | Words per puzzle | Ages | Puzzles |
| Easy | 8 x 8 | Across and down | 6, each with a picture | 4 to 6 | Under the Tree, Snowy Day, Santa, Christmas Cookies |
| Medium | 12 x 12 | Across, down and diagonally | 10 | 7 to 9 | Christmas Tree, Santaās Workshop, Winter Weather, Christmas Kitchen |
| Hard | 16 x 16 | Every direction, including backwards | 15 | 10 and up | Christmas Eve, Around the World, The Nativity, Merry Christmas Words |

Easy Christmas Word Searches (Ages 4 to 6)
The easy puzzles have big letters, short words like TREE, STAR and SLED, and a small picture next to each word in the list. Words only go across or down, never backwards. Thatās on purpose: young kids get frustrated fast if a wordās hiding upside down, and the whole point is that they finish and feel clever.
If your child isnāt reading yet, point to the picture, say the word together, and look for the first letter. Itās sneaky phonics practice. They wonāt notice, and you donāt have to tell them.

Medium (Ages 7 to 9)
The medium grids are 12 by 12 with ten words each, and words can run diagonally as well as across and down. They still read forwards, so nothingās backwards yet. Words like TINSEL, REINDEER and GINGERBREAD are long enough to be satisfying when you spot them, and thereās always one word that everyone in the room swears isnāt there. It is. Iāve checked.
These are the ones Iād print for most classrooms, and if youāre not sure which level to pick, start here. They take about ten to fifteen minutes, which is just right for the end of a lesson.

Hard Christmas Word Searches (Ages 10 and Up)
The hard puzzles are 16 by 16 with fifteen words, and words go in every direction, backwards included. FRANKINCENSE might be running diagonally up and to the left. Good luck. Youāll need it, and maybe a highlighter.
Thereās one nativity puzzle in this level, with words like BETHLEHEM, MANGER and SHEPHERDS. Itās labeled, so itās easy to include or leave out. The āAround the Worldā puzzle uses countries that celebrate Christmas, which makes a nice starting point for a geography chat.

How We Make Sure Every Puzzle Works
Thereās nothing worse than a word search where a word just isnāt there, or where it turns up twice. So every grid in this packās checked by code before it goes in the PDF: each word appears exactly once, nothing runs off the edge, and the random filler letters donāt accidentally spell anything rude. Itās a small thing, but itās the difference between a happy kid and a kid whoās convinced youāve tricked them.
Tips for Using Them in a Classroom
- Print the level, not the age.Ā A confident seven-year-old might love the hard puzzles, and an older child who finds reading tricky might prefer medium.
- Make it a race.Ā Pairs work well. The first pair to find every word gets to choose the next song.
- Use the answer keys.Ā Theyāre at the back of the PDF, so you can print the puzzles without them. Kids canāt peek if the answers arenāt there.
- Early finishers:Ā flip the page over and ask them to make their own word search with Christmas words.

Yes. Every puzzle has its own answer key at the back of the PDF, with each word circled. You can print the puzzles without the keys if youād rather not have them lying around. Teachers usually keep one copy of the keys at the front.
What age are these word searches for?
The easy puzzles suit ages 4 to 6, the medium ones ages 7 to 9, and the hard ones ages 10 and up. Those ages are only a guide. Pick the level that matches how confident your child is with reading, not just how old they are.
Are there easy Christmas word searches for preschoolers?

Thereās one nativity puzzle in the hard level, with words like Bethlehem, manger and shepherds. Itās labeled so you can include it or skip it. The other eleven puzzles are trees, snow, Santa, food and other secular themes.
How long does a word search take?
An easy puzzle usually takes five to ten minutes. Medium puzzles take ten to fifteen, and hard ones can take twenty minutes or more. That makes them handy for a quiet table activity or the end of a school day.
