The first Thanksgiving word search I printed for a Grade 2 class had Mayflower in it. And Plymouth. And pilgrims. Thirty Canadian seven-year-olds stared at it politely and asked me what a pilgrim was. That is what sent me looking for a Canadian Thanksgiving word search built for a Canadian class, and it’s why I ended up making these.
There are eight puzzles here, plus a second set of word searches for the American date in November. All free, all in one PDF, with answer keys. The word lists are Canadian, so it’s harvest and maple and cornucopia rather than anything borrowed from a different country’s history lesson.
What’s in the Canadian Thanksgiving Word Search Pack
- Word search, easy. Eight words, no diagonals, no backwards. Ages five to seven.
- Word search, medium. Twelve words with diagonals. Ages seven to nine.
- Word search, tricky. Sixteen words, diagonals and backwards. Nine and up.
- Word scramble. Ten jumbled harvest words with a picture clue beside each.
- Crossword. Twelve clues written for readers, not for adults who like crosswords.
- Maze. Get the turkey to the barn. Nobody has ever needed a reading age for a maze.
- ABC order. Twelve words to sort. This one quietly does more teaching than the rest put together.
- Secret message. Crack the symbol code to reveal a line about being thankful.
Plus answer keys for all eight, which is the sheet teachers actually ask for and the one most free packs leave out.

Canadian Thanksgiving is Monday 12 October 2026. American Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November 2026. Six weeks apart, same harvest, same idea.
The pack covers both. The three word searches come twice over, once with Canadian words and once with American ones. A word search grid is built around its own word list, so the words cannot simply be swapped out and the American sheets are their own grids. The other five puzzles use harvest vocabulary that suits either date.
If you’ve got family on both sides of the border, this is the one printable that doesn’t need replacing in six weeks.

The Word List, and Why It Matters
Here’s the Canadian list the puzzles are built on:
harvest, maple, pumpkin, cornucopia, gratitude, turkey, squash, cranberry, October, family, feast, thankful, autumn, apple, corn, pie
No pilgrims. No Mayflower. Those belong to the American holiday, and a sheet built around them doesn’t reflect what Canadian Thanksgiving marks.
If you want history for the older ones, the honest version is more interesting than the tidy one. Indigenous peoples held communal harvest feasts here long before any European arrived. Martin Frobisher’s crew held a service of thanks in the Eastern Arctic in 1578 for surviving the voyage, though historians point out it had nothing to do with a harvest, which is the thing Thanksgiving is usually built on. And the second Monday of October only became the official date on 31 January 1957, which is recent enough to surprise a Grade 5 class.

Using These in a Classroom
| Puzzle | Ages | Time | Good for |
| Word search, easy | 5 to 7 | 10 min | Early finishers |
| Word search, medium | 7 to 9 | 15 min | Whole class |
| Word search, tricky | 9+ | 20 min | The ones who finish everything |
| Word scramble | 7+ | 10 min | Spelling practice |
| Crossword | 8+ | 20 min | Pairs |
| Maze | 4+ | 5 min | Wet break |
| ABC order | 6+ | 10 min | Alphabetical-order practice |
| Secret message | 7+ | 15 min | Quiet time |
The three word searches cover the same topic at three reading levels, so you can match the sheet to the table without handing anyone something that looks like a different worksheet.
Free for classroom use. Print as many as you need, just don’t resell them.

A Few Things Worth Knowing
Print the answer keys separately and keep them at your desk. Print them with the puzzles and somebody will find them within four minutes.
The tricky word search is genuinely tricky. I checked every word in the finished grid rather than trusting the generator, because a word search with an unfindable word is worse than no word search at all.
Laminate the mazes if you want them to survive more than one group.
More Thanksgiving Printables
Our Canadian Thanksgiving printables pack has the gratitude tree and the thankful placemat, Canadian Thanksgiving crafts covers the maple leaf projects, and the Thanksgiving coloring pages work for both dates. If you liked the puzzle format, the World Cup word search uses the same one.
