Letter to Santa Template (Free Printable + Santa’s Reply)

My daughter’s first letter to Santa was a drawing of a horse and the word PLEES. That was the whole letter. Santa knew exactly what she meant.

So a letter to Santa template should fit the kid, not the other way round. We made four, one for each stage of writing, from “I can just about hold a crayon” to “I’d like to discuss my list in some detail”. Each one comes in a Dear Father Christmas version too, for UK families. There’s also a reply from Santa for you to fill in, and a nice list certificate.

It’s all in one free PDF. No email, no sign-up.

Which Letter to Santa Template Fits Your Child

Go by what your child can write, not by their age. A confident 5-year-old might love the sentence starters, and a 7-year-old who hates writing will be much happier circling things.

Draw It (Ages 3 to 4)

Big boxes and hardly any words. There’s a line for their name (you write it, or they have a go), a box for “This is me” and a box for “This is what I’d love”. Ask them what’s in the picture and write it small underneath. You’ll want to remember it later.

Circle and Fill In (Ages 4 to 6)

Short sentences with gaps, and choices to circle: how old they are, three wishes, and what to leave out on Christmas Eve (cookies, milk, or carrots for the reindeer). “Love from” is dotted so they can trace it.

Sentence Starters (Ages 6 to 8)

Handwriting lines with a dotted middle line, and a starter for each part: This year I learned… Something kind I did was… For Christmas I would love… A question for you…

The question is always the best bit. Ours have asked how the reindeer stay warm, and whether elves get the weekend off.

Letter Paper (Ages 9 and Up)

Lined paper with a festive border and nothing else. Older kids don’t want to be told what to write. Some of them are writing mostly for a younger sibling’s benefit. Let them.

How to Write a Letter to Santa

  1. Start with “Dear Santa” or “Dear Father Christmas”, whichever your family says.
  2. Say your name, how old you are, and one thing about your year.
  3. Say thank you, for last Christmas or for something good that happened.
  4. Ask for one to three things. A short list is easier for the elves (and for whoever’s doing the shopping).
  5. Sign off with “Love from” and your name. If you’re posting it, add your address so Santa can write back.

Where to Mail a Letter to Santa in 2026

All four countries have an official way to get a letter to the North Pole. These dates come from each post office’s own page, checked in October 2026. Post early. The deadlines come round faster than you’d think.

US: USPS Operation Santa

  • Address: Santa, 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888
  • Stamp: a First-Class stamp
  • Deadline: postmarked by 5 December

One honest note. Operation Santa doesn’t send every child a reply. Letters can be adopted by volunteers who answer them, but there’s no guarantee a letter gets picked. If you want a reply for sure, use the Santa reply page in our pack.

Canada: Canada Post

  • Address: Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0, Canada
  • Stamp: not needed inside Canada. Put your return address on the envelope
  • Deadline: send by 9 December 2026

UK: Royal Mail

  • Address: Santa/Father Christmas, Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland, XM4 5HQ
  • Welsh letters: Sion Corn, Ogof Sion Corn, Gwlad Y Ceirw, XM4 5HQ
  • Stamp: yes, a real one, with your full name and address on the back
  • Deadline: post by Wednesday 9 December 2026

Australia: Australia Post Santa Mail

There’s no address to write. Kids hand their letter in at the counter of their local post office. Santa Mail comes back on 11 November 2026. Last year it ran until 24 December, and kids got a reply and a small gift on the spot while stocks lasted. Australia Post hasn’t put up this year’s closing date yet, so check their Santa Mail page before you go.

The pack has all four addresses as labels you can cut out and stick on the envelope. And if you’ve missed the date, don’t panic. Santa’s reply page works whenever you need it.

How to Write a Reply From Santa

The reply page has Santa’s letterhead and a few lines to fill in. A good reply is short and specific:

  • Mention one thing from their letter, so they know Santa actually read it.
  • Mention one good thing they did this year. Be specific. Kids notice.
  • Add a North Pole detail: what the reindeer are up to, or what the weather’s like.
  • Sign it in different handwriting, or ask another grown-up to.

Something like: “Dear Maya, thank you for your letter and the drawing of Dasher, which is now on the stable wall. The elves told me how kind you were to your little brother when he was poorly. Keep being brave. Love, Santa.”

I’m never sure whether to leave it under the tree or by the empty cookie plate. We’ve done both, and it worked both times.

The Nice List Certificate

A certificate that says your child is on Santa’s Nice List for 2026, signed by Santa and the Head Elf, with a gold seal for them to color. It goes on the fridge and stays there until about March.

We give it as a thank-you for a good year, not as a threat in early December. It works better that way, honestly.
