Somebody asked in a Facebook group a few years back for Thanksgiving craft ideas that weren’t turkeys, mentioned it was Canadian Thanksgiving so it was coming up fast, and the top reply was “Pilgrims and Indians?” That thread still turns up on the first page of Google, which tells you everything about how little has been written for us.
So here are twenty-nine crafts that actually suit the Canadian version. No pilgrims, because that’s a different country’s story. Plenty of maple, because ours lands in the middle of October when the trees are at their absolute best. Free printable templates for the ones that need them.
Why Canadian Thanksgiving Crafts Are Different
This isn’t just a scheduling detail, it genuinely changes what you can make.
Ours is on Monday 12 October 2026. The American one is Thursday 26 November. That six-week gap is the whole thing. In mid-October the leaves are still on the trees and the ground is covered in the good ones, so your kids can walk outside and come back with craft supplies. By late November down south the leaves are long gone and everybody’s working from construction paper.
The history’s different too. Canadian Thanksgiving grew out of harvest festivals and a much older tradition of giving thanks for a safe journey, which is why our version leans on harvest and gratitude rather than the pilgrim story. Worth knowing before you print a buckle hat.

Nature Crafts, While the Leaves Are Still Good
Start here, because this window closes.
Go and collect leaves first. Maple, oak, whatever’s on your street, the flatter the better. Then: leaf rubbings with the paper on top and a crayon on its side. Pressed leaf suncatchers using sticky contact paper, which look genuinely lovely in a window. A leaf garland strung on wool across the mantelpiece. Leaf crowns, which my youngest wore for about four days straight.
Then there’s a leaf printing session with paint, a leaf bookmark laminated with tape, and a leaf creature where you add googly eyes and legs and see what happens.
Pinecones work too. Pinecone turkeys if you must, but pinecone owls and hedgehogs are better and nobody’s done them to death.

Gratitude Crafts, Which Are the Point
Thanksgiving is a harvest and gratitude festival here, and these are the crafts that land.
A gratitude tree, where everyone writes one thing on a paper leaf and hangs it on a branch in a jar. We have a printable gratitude tree in our [Canadian Thanksgiving printables] pack if you’d rather not draw the leaves yourself.
Gratitude stones, painted and written on and left around the house. A thankful jar that stays out all month. A gratitude paper chain, one link per day counting down to the Monday. And thank-you cards for whoever’s cooking, which costs nothing and is the one craft that reliably makes an adult cry.

Table Crafts the Kids Can Own
Hand these over entirely and let them decorate the table.
Place cards with everyone’s name. A paper cornucopia filled with cut-out fruit. Napkin rings from card and ribbon. A centrepiece made from a jar, some leaves and a tea light. Painted mini pumpkins, no carving required, which also means no knives.
There’s a printable thankful placemat in the same pack if you want one less thing to design.

Canadian Touches
A few that are properly ours.
A maple leaf handprint, where you cut their handprint into a leaf shape and label it with the year. We’ve got five of these now and they get smaller as you go back, which is an unreasonable thing to do to a parent.
A Canada goose from a paper plate, since October is when they’re all overhead honking about leaving. A maple leaf wreath from a paper plate ring. And a simple red and white maple leaf banner, which doubles as decoration for anything else all year.

Easy Ones for Toddlers
Keep the standards low and the mess contained.
Apple stamping, cut an apple in half and let them go. Pumpkin seed mosaics with glue and a printed outline. Tissue paper leaves scrunched and stuck down. Handprint turkeys, because they’re a classic and a two-year-old can do one.

Press your leaves for a day or two under a heavy book before using them or they curl as they dry and lift off the page.
Print templates on something heavier than copy paper if the kids are cutting them out, around 160gsm. There’s more on this in our guide to the best printer and paper for printables.
And do the outdoor collecting on the weekend before, not on the Monday, because somebody will be in a mood and it will be raining.
More for the Long Weekend
If you’ve got more than an afternoon to fill, our Canadian Thanksgiving printables pack has the gratitude tree and placemat ready to print, the Thanksgiving coloring pages work for both the October and November dates, and the fall leaf crafts carry on well past the long weekend.
Looking further ahead, our Halloween coloring pages are only a few weeks away, and the Christmas printables for kids are worth bookmarking before the term gets away from you.
Quick Questions
What crafts are good for Canadian Thanksgiving?
Harvest and gratitude crafts suit it best. Gratitude trees, leaf crafts, cornucopias, table decorations and maple leaf projects. Because our Thanksgiving is in mid-October, real leaves are still available, which American Thanksgiving crafts cannot rely on.
Are Canadian Thanksgiving crafts different from American ones?
Mostly yes. Canadian Thanksgiving comes from harvest tradition rather than the pilgrim story, so pilgrim hats and that imagery do not fit. Ours also falls six weeks earlier, when autumn leaves are at their best.
When is Canadian Thanksgiving in 2026?
Monday 12 October 2026, the second Monday of October. The American one is Thursday 26 November 2026.
What Thanksgiving crafts work without a turkey?
Leaf rubbings, pressed leaf suncatchers, gratitude trees, gratitude stones, cornucopias, pinecone owls, place cards and maple leaf handprints. Not one of them needs a turkey.
Are the printable templates free?
Yes. The maple leaf outline, gratitude leaves, cornucopia, place cards and mosaic sheet are in one free PDF with no sign-up. Just don’t resell them.
Which crafts suit toddlers?
Apple stamping, tissue paper leaves, handprint turkeys and pumpkin seed mosaics. All of them are forgiving and none need scissors skills.
