Beyond keeping little hands busy, leaf crafts sneak in a surprising amount: cutting and gluing build fine-motor skills, sorting leaves by colour and size is early maths, and a nature walk to collect them is a free afternoon out. My youngest still can’t say “chlorophyll,” but she can now tell you exactly why leaves change colour, which she learned mid-craft and now repeats to strangers.

The best part? Most cost nothing. A few need our printable templates; the rest need leaves, glue, and a bit of tolerance for glitter escaping into the floorboards forever.

1. Leaf rubbings. Pop a leaf under paper, rub the side of a crayon over it, and the veins appear like magic. The classic — and still the one my kids ask for first.
2. Leaf suncatchers. Press leaves between two sheets of sticky contact paper, trim to shape, tape to a window. Just don’t be surprised when every window in the house is suddenly “reserved.”
3. Leaf animals. Glue leaves onto paper as wings, tails and bodies — a maple leaf makes a brilliant fox tail. This is where the “done in one leaf” kid suddenly gets very invested.
4. Leaf crowns. Thread or tape leaves around a paper headband. Instant Autumn Royalty (and instant refusal to take it off).
5. Leaf garland. Thread a needle through a row of leaves (adult job) for a string to hang across the window or mantel.
6. Painted leaf prints. Brush paint onto the back of a leaf, press it down, lift. Gorgeous, and messier than it sounds — lay down newspaper first, trust me.
7. Leaf people. Draw little faces and stick-arms onto leaves. Silly, quick, and toddlers love them.
8. Pressed-leaf bookmarks. Press leaves in a heavy book for a few days, then laminate or tape into a strip. A nice slow one for older kids.

• Paper leaf mosaic. Cut printed leaves into pieces and glue them into a bigger shape. Brilliant for using up odd scraps.

A Few Things That Actually Help

• Press your leaves first. A day or two flat in a heavy book stops them curling and crumbling mid-craft.
• Heavier paper is your friend. For anything with glue or paint, print the templates on something sturdier than thin copy paper — see our guide to the best cardstock and paper for printbles.
• Print in black and white to save ink; the whole point is that the kids add the colour.
• Lay down newspaper for the paint ones. You’ll thank me.
